Environmental Educator (2 positions open- one full-time and one part-time)
Solana Center for Environmental Innovation (SCEI) is a non-profit organization serving San Diego County and beyond. Our program areas are broad in scope, addressing both regional and national issues, and include environmental education in pollution prevention, composting, recycling, gardening, and sustainable living. Duties and Responsibilities:
• Design effective, informative and innovative presentations and curricula on composting, gardening, recycling and other environmental topics, in collaboration with other members of the Education Development Team
• Develop pedagogic strategies and programs for a variety of audiences (ranging from young children to adults) and in a variety of settings, including classrooms, outdoor workshops, and event booths
• Deliver effective presentations and curricula, inspiring audiences of children and adults to learn about environmental stewardship and make environmentally-conscious choices
• Utilize a variety of instructional methods including hands-on activities, demonstrations, PowerPoint presentations, personal narrative, demonstration, and other innovative approaches
• Promote and schedule educational activities and initiate and maintain positive relationships with school and community contacts
• Evaluate effectiveness of educational programs and strategies through observation and assessment of feedback to ensure that instructional activities meet the educational standards established by the organization and support the overall mission of excellence in environmental education
• Locate, assess, and compile educational resources for use in curriculum
• Conduct efficient academic and web-based research to update curriculum and to maintain body of knowledge regarding environmental topicsRequired Qualifications:
• Experienced in teaching both adults and children
• Exceptional communicator (written and oral, including public speaking skills)
• Detail-oriented and a self-starter
• Experienced collaborator (will work with diverse groups including volunteers and community partners)
• Strong computer skills, with experience using Microsoft Office suite
• Excellent organizational skills
• Flexible schedule (Solana Center regularly schedules evening and weekend courses and events, and all staff members contribute to fulfilling staffing needs at these events.)
• Capable of lifting up to 40 lbs.
• Must possess current driver’s license and current automobile insurancePreferred Qualifications:
• Bilingual (Spanish)
• Experience with design programs (Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft InDesign, or similar)
• Experience with websites and social media marketing (Facebook, Wordpress, Twitter, Drupal)
• Knowledge-base in topics including environmental science, land use, gardening, food systems, food access, community engagement, waste diversion, composting, pollution prevention, water systems, and resource conservation
• Bachelor’s DegreeThis position is non-exempt and is paid hourly, according to the laws of the State of California. The pay range is $15-16/hour. 2 positions available: one full-time (40 hours per week) and one part-time (15-20 hours per week).
