Senior Storage Systems Administrator – 02872 (San Diego, CA)

Overall, the position of Senior Storage Systems Administrator is expected to partner with the organization to:
- Troubleshoot Windows, Linux, and Mac systems; know when issue is related to cpu, memory, storage, network, or a combination
- Have or develop 'spidey-sense' – the ability to examine a system and determine which direction to begin troubleshooting (perfect results not required)
- Serve as second- or third-level support for specific systems, including being on-call via cellphone as needed. Set informal goal to minimize the need for out-of-business-hours calls through documentation and delegation
- Be OK with performing any level work when needed — storage design for new database one hour, and exchanging tapes from the library the next
- Have the ability to both perform manual procedures for storage management, and to automate, script, and document recurring procedures for delegation to various operational groups; includes having an eye for efficiency measures – know when and how to suggest, plan, and implement improvements to procedures
- Have knowledge of how to plan capacity requirements, including 'hold-back' amounts required on various systems to maintain performance, and when to order additional capacity to accommodate actual (versus predicted) growth
- Have knowledge to be proactive about customer requirements regarding data size, data protection. Conversely, knowledge of how to appropriately thin-provision space and adjust to match customer application
- Know about RAID, LUNs (virtual and direct), and filesystems; strengths and weaknesses of each and when one is more appropriate than the other
- Know about NFS, CIFS, fibre channel, iSCSI, AoE, strengths and weaknesses (and appropriateness) of each
- Know of the goals of data protection strategies and have the ability to design and implement such strategies, whether tape-based, replica-based, or otherwise
- Ideally have familiarity with installation, configuration, administration, and troubleshooting of NetApp, EMC, BlueArc and Hitachi storage systems (Including non-mainline products). Understand the strengths and weaknesses of the broad spectrum of storage products available on the market
- Have familiarity with installation, configuration, administration, and troubleshooting of Brocade, QLogic, and Cisco storage networking gear (ethernet and fibre channel)
- Have familiarity with clustered storage such as StorNext and XSan file systems
- Have an understanding of the different data access patterns for various data types, including database, document, revision control, audio, 3D, and video, and what makes different storage types more appropriate for each
- Have familiarity with NetWorker, NetBackup, StorNext Storage Manager, Avamar backup/data protection software and systems
- Have familiarity with the performance boundaries of physical disks (spinning and flash) and the measures taken by storage system vendors to compensate
- Assist in the documentation and creation of departmental procedures
- Perform other related duties as may be required
- Technical project planning, implementing, and operationalizing; knows how to specify the technical aspects of a project during planning, how to shepherd the project through implementation (whether the individual is doing the work or supervising installers – and knows how to ask questions and capture information to become familiar with the process if the individual isn't doing hands-on work), and how to develop and document procedures to bring a system to day-to-day operation

Required Experience / Education:
- At least 3 years of experience in a systems administrator role or equivalent
- At least 1 year of post-high school education, training, or equivalent
Preferred Experience / Education:
- At least 6 years of experience in a systems administrator role or equivalent
- A degree from a four-year college (i.e., BA, BS) or equivalent
